Perhaps in the coming garden season many suburban house owners will try to pay attention and time on growing edible veggie garden. However don’t forget about the visual pleasure you will get from you garden or landscape design. Always make sure to add some decorative elements. In this article I’ll present you with simple DIY step by step instructions on creating a small pergola. Its modest size and simple shape allow the pergola to fit in any kind of landscape design.
Even if your garden has a beautiful and self-sufficient elegance, pergola can add to it its “vertical flavor”. Simple design can refine the landscape accent and instantly transform the space.
Wooden box – this is the simplest and easiest-to-performance version of the pergola. Formulations for pergolas and arbors, which are collected as a designer, can now be bought in many specialty stores. They can be made of plastic or metal. But this is too simple, is not it? If the available items are boards and bars, they sure can become handy.

But to create our pergolas, timber materials should be smooth and pretreated: polished, burr-free. Wood for pillars should be strong and durable, thick enough to withstand the weight of the surrounding plants & greenery and various weather complexity.
Picking up boards for the top of the pergola, evaluate your budget and time – curvy edges will look more elegant, but you need to buy (that will be a bit more expensive) or do it yourself (which would require more time and skill).
Our design is a height of 2.4 meters, width of 1.2 and a little more than half a meter in length.

In the selected location, where you’ll connect with the pillars, make a mark. Use a large square that the marks were symmetrical.
For layout, you can use pegs and rope. In this photo, a rectangle that will become a pergola, seems small. However, you should only come from your calculations – if your decor will have an area a little bigger, then the foundation will look completely different.
Check if everything is to done accurately and in accordance with the plan scheme. Then double-check! When you are sure that you are completely satisfied with the given parameters, get the installation of metal “legs” for pergolas. In our case, the installation uses a special metal crutches. With the help of a hammer and a pair of strong male hands they can drive deep into the ground, and set bars in the upper part of the hollow. It is much easier and faster than digging holes, fill them with concrete and wait until it hardens. Use the level to make sure that each metal crutch-pillar mounted exactly vertically.
In the prepared grooves insert bars. Use a level to check the accuracy.
Costa metal supports can be bought in stores. If not, then scoop out the 4 holes for the poles. You can set the wooden beams right into them and pour concrete, but it is better if in the hole between the ground and the pole will be a bit of rubble. This sort of “cake” will protect short-lived tree from excessive moisture. Make sure that the bars have adopted a strictly vertical position.
Cement needed to congeal, so the construction is extended for a few days. When the solution has hardened, you can re-take the pergola.
The top two rungs set in a pre-made groove bars. The length of segments that will extend beyond the frame should be the same. Make sure you have done everything symmetrically and strengthen attachment, scoring in each joint pair of nails.
You should get two rectangular frames of equal size. These twins look similar to sports lifting bar, but we, the wizards-designers, will quickly convert them beyond recognition. Am I right?
Four upper crossbar should have two slots for installation. You may be tempted to make the top design directly on the ground – not worth it. Get up and ready to install “roof” pergolas will not be easy. Save your nerves, it is better slowly and carefully mark the points for the top four panels and install them later.
